The lights come on, illuminating a cheerful setting, smell of expensive perfume tantalises the senses, the musicians tuning their instruments fill the air with notes. Soon the audiences arrive and so does the performer, and thus begins another Mehfil. India’ s rich cultural heritage is laden with such Mehfils in thousands of nooks and corners. The skill and repute of the female singers in such Mehfils is also legendary. What is also legendary is the lack of acceptance of such performers in main stream society and the huge gap between their skill and societal status. ‘Mehfil e Mausiqui’ is a tri-lingual production (conducted in Bengali, Hindi and English) that commemorates this rich and royal legacy of Indian culture and heritage through an array of audio-visual elements like dance, songs and oration. It covers a vast musical genre ranging from Thumree to Gazal to popular film numbers. Most importantly, it pays respect to legendary singers like Rasulan Bai, Malka Jaan, Gauhar Jaan to name a few, and acquaints the audience of their contribution to this country’ s cultural heritage.
